# Polkadot

[Polkadot](https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/maintain-sync) (DOT) is a third-generation blockchain focused on interoperability and scalability. Its network connects independent blockchains, called parachains, through the central Relay Chain, which ensures shared security. Parachains are tailored for specific needs and enable seamless cross-chain communication using Cross-Chain Message Passing (XCMP) and bridge parachains. Polkadot’s sharded model processes transactions in parallel, significantly increasing throughput.

It uses a reserve-backed system to manage asset movements between parachains, providing significantly lower fees than traditional solutions and supporting broad asset issuance and usage.
